Terms of Service
1. Acceptance
These Terms govern your use of Textree — the desktop note-taking application, its official builds, and the textree.me website (together, the "Service"), provided by iyulab, inc. ("we", "us"). By installing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
2. The Service
Textree is a local, single-user Markdown note app. Your notes are ordinary .mdfiles stored on your own device. The app runs locally and works fully offline. Some optional features use the internet — for example, downloading a local AI model, publishing a note to the web, or joining the cloud hosting waitlist. Each of these is described below and, where it involves the internet, is either initiated by you or clearly disclosed.
3. Your data stays local
The source of truth for your content is the plain Markdown files on your device. We do not host, sync, or have access to your notes. You are responsible for backing up your own files. When you choose to publish a note to the web, only that note — and only what you explicitly publish — is made public by you; nothing else leaves your device automatically.
4. Diagnostic data
Official signed builds of the desktop app collect a small amount of content-free diagnostic data (app-launch and error signals) to help us detect and fix crashes and first-run failures. This data can never, by construction, contain your notes, file names, folder paths, or search queries. What is and is not collected — and why error diagnostics are a condition of using the official build — is described in full in ourPrivacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms.
5. Optional features
- Local AI: if you enable it, the app downloads an AI model to your device and runs it locally. Your notes are not sent anywhere to power it.
- Web publish: a read-only, one-directional export of a note you choose, made public at your request.
- Cloud hosting waitlist: if you join, we store the email address you provide to send you an invite. The desktop app stays free and local regardless.
6. Open source and official builds
Textree's core is open source under the GPL-3.0 license. The diagnostic collection described in Section 4 applies to the official signed builds we distribute. Because the source is open, you may build or run a version of Textree without any diagnostics, and doing so does not violate these Terms.
7. Disclaimer and limitation of liability
The Service is provided "as is," without warranties of any kind. We are not responsible for third-party services (such as AI model providers or hosting platforms) or for loss of data. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our liability arising from your use of the Service is limited.
8. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. For material changes we will give reasonable advance notice through the Service or this page. Continued use after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.
